Adorable Baby Shower Happy Cloud Cake

I made this ADORABLE baby shower cake for a lovely lady who is undoubtedly going to have one of the cutest kids ever!

I used a cool recipe for the icing that I’ve not used before… it’s called cloud icing, so I found that fitting.
Ingredients

1 3/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup water
4 egg whites, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

In a saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Boil for 3-4 minutes or until a candy thermometer reads 242 degrees F (firm-ball stage). Meanwhile, beat egg whites and cream of tartar in a mixing bowl until foamy. Slowly pour in hot sugar mixture; continue to beat on high for 7 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Add vanilla. Continue beating until frosting reaches desired consistency, about 2 minutes.

I added an extra tsp of vanilla just to give it a little more body. It turned out great! Yum!

Oh Baby!

Well hey there folks! Yesterday I went to a baby shower. I decided to make a small cake to bring.

I made a butterscotch cake and then made a caramel maple frosting to decorate it with. It was so tasty!!

It was nice to go to a baby shower and see my friend Beth in all her pregnant glory! She is due in June…

We were trying so hard to hold out until 12 weeks to spill the news, but after our ultrasound last week, we couldn’t contain ourselves any longer!! This is my 8th week. We’ve been trying for six years and we’re so thrilled. Can’t wait to make birthday cakes for my little guy or girl!

Look Whooo’s Having a Baby!

I got a call from my friend Crystal. She told me that her sister was going to have a baby and that she was going to need a cake for the shower. She sent me a text saying the cake theme was going to be aquatic. All sorts of fish, turtles, squid, octopus, corral etc.
I was stoked… I mean… I LOVE aquatic things!
I have a full sleeve dedicated to sea turtles!

I went over to discuss the cake with the rest of the family and how surprised was I to learn the theme was not in fact going to be sea life… it was going to be OWLS.

I was actually totally stoked on this. Who doesn’t like owls?? They’re so cute and so hip right now. I love that retro is so in right now. I’ve actually been wanting to do an owl cake for a while, so this was just great.

I was asked to use green, brown, blue and orange as the colors for the cake. She’s having a boy, so I made the little owl blue and green.

One of the sisters asked if I could make cupcakes. I told her that I don’t really make cupcakes… they’re just not my thing. They’re tiny and time consuming. I like making BIG things lol.
But when she told me she was hoping for a dozen cupcakes with tiny green owls, I couldn’t resist.

I set to work on the owls first thing.

Once I put the eyes on these owls… my heart just melted. They were SO cute.

For the cake, I pushed together two quarter sheet cakes so they could have two flavors. I covered everything in a thick coat of buttercream and then rolled out blue fondant to cover it. I cut the shape of a tree branch out of fondant and laid it on top of the cake. I used a food color marker to draw the wood grain on. I thought it would pop well with all the bold details.

As soon as the owls were on, I was totally thrilled. It could be my cutest creation ever.

Owl Cake and Cupcakes

I put the cupcakes in one of my little brown bakery boxes and decided there needed to be one more. I iced up one of the extras and made some little leaves to put on it. It all turned out just adorable.

One of the best parts was when I showed up with the cake and the blue on the cake matched EXACTLY to the cups, plates and napkins that I hadn’t even seen yet!
The mom-to-be was super thrilled and I got lots of hugs.

And all this owl talk got me excited, so here’s some great owl stuff I found on ETSY!

Chocolate and vanilla cake covered in fondant. Some hand painted details, buttercream details, dragee details and fondant details. All 100% edible except for the 6 tooth picks holding the tuning pegs on! It was a huge hit. I had a piece the next day. SO GOOD. I was at the bar the next couple nights and received tons of compliments. It made me feel awesome about what I do!

I had a birthday cake for a little girl with a horse on it!

Pretty adorable. I love the combination of brown, blue and white. :) The birthday girl was thrilled. That makes my life every time.

And then Addison’s birthday cake! It turned out really perfect!

I love making the cake so much that I can forgive him for hiding under the table while we sang happy birthday. I got him Toy Story crayons, Toy Story sand toys, a 3-d reptile book and an alligator mask. haha. When he hugged me for making him his cake he pulled me on the floor and rolled on me hahaha. I love that kid.

Baby Shower Cake

Here’s a cake I did for my co-worker’s daughter’s baby shower. I matched the frosting to the yarn used to make a blanket for the baby.

Baby Shower Cake

It’s a Butterfly… it’s an airplane… no! It’s a cake!

This week I did two cakes! One was for my best friend Chelsea’s sister’s baby shower.
I was given this fabric as inspiration:

And this is what I made:
Butterfly Baby Shower Cake

Everything is buttercream on the cake itself. The butterflies are made of chocolate and are copies of the butterflies on the fabric. The little flowers are fondant with buttercream. The inside is lemon with strawberry filling!! It’s the same flavor I made for Chelsea’s birthday!
I love it. It’s quite possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever made!

I also made a cake for a friend of mine on Twitter! @GinaKay!
This is an air craft carrier I made for her husband:

Sorry for the stupid black stuff all around the photo haha. I just needed to try to hide all of the junk on the counter!!!
There’s a small Jazz band playing on the deck as well. I made it sort of an abstract element. Her husband is a Navy vet who loves jazz! This was mostly buttercream. The deck was made of oreo cookies with I processed into a fine grain in my food processor and there are fondant pieces here and there. The water is all buttercream.

I am making my niece a birthday cake on Sunday! Can’t wait to post it!! It’s going to be VERY cute!
