Dinosaurs and Trains

This cake was pretty fun! Dinosaurs AND trains. For kids, I don’t know what’s much more fun than those two things. So, combining those things is a lot of fun for sure!

The Fish Cake

Whenever I get a project, I usually give it a nickname so that when I’m working on it, I can remember which cake I’m getting things for or baking for, need which pans for etc. Some times it’s something elaborate, but most of the time it’s pretty straight forward. This was simply… the fish cake.
A while back, at least a year ago, but probably more like two, I saw this fish cake pan somewhere at a yard sale or a thrift store or something for like a dollar. I knew I had to have it.

It sat in my cabinet forever, but I knew one day, it would get it’s chance to be filled with batter and baked to perfect fish perfect.
So when my old friend Katie from high school contacted me asking if I’d ever done a fish cake, I sprung at the chance to say, “Nope, but I have JUST the pan!”

I made the fish strawberry as sort of a gross gesture to fish guts. I mean, it was a little boy’s birthday cake. They’re into that kind of thing… anyhow, I made a 1/4 sheet cake and dressed it up all boggy with crushed oreos, a pool of blue frosting, gummy worms and buttercream grass…

I iced the fish and then proceeded to cover it in scales… one scale at a time. I used an icing tip as a cutter and cut out what felt like a million little circles and laid them one at a time.
One they were all laid, I added the other details and hand painted the entire thing with some diluted food coloring gels.

It was so great to get to see my friend again when she came to pick up the cake. We got to catch up on things for a while before she headed out, delicious cake in hand.

Seems it was a big hit. I mean, what kid doesn’t like cake covered in oreos and candy?

By the time I was finished looking at photos of fish and painting this thing, I’d decided fish were hideous aquatic troll creatures. I would probably still have taken a bite of this one though.

Eddy Turns 4!

My sweet, sweet chihuahua turned four and it’s become tradition to make him cakes every year! Not just any cakes though, meaty dog cakes :)

I sort of make up the recipe every year as I go along… flour, eggs, chicken stock… some sort of protein like chicken or beef, carrots, beans… good stuff. I pulsed it all together in the food processor and poured it into a greased pan.

I baked it at 350F for 45 minutes.
Then I made mashed potatoes with no butter or anything, just a little water. I tinted them with food coloring and used them as frosting.

Tutorial Tuesday: IRL

You won’t be learning much in today’s edition because I took this Tuesday to do an in real life Tutorial Tuesday! My friend Kevin is awesome, he’s done two of my three baking related tattoos and I’ve known him since he used to make lattes for a living before he became like one of the coolest tattoo artists ever.
Also, he has two of the cutest kids I’ve ever met. Well, they were kids… and now they’re like… these crazy sort of grown up looking people. I don’t really know how this happens because last time I saw his daughter I think she was reading me a Dora the Explorer book and she came over today and was as tall as I am. Haha. Parents, stop letting your children grow up! It’s making me feel old!

Anyhow, Eros is 13. Almost 14, as it turns out. And she loves Ace of Cakes. She watches it like crazy and she’s obsessed with cake decorating. She’s been rolling play dough over tin cans as her practice, which, I think, is pretty darn adorable. Now, when I first started, I also loved Ace of Cakes. I didn’t know where or how to get started. Then I helped a good friend with an art project by helping her illustrate a children’s book she wrote. I didn’t ask anything in return, but I came home to a package in the mail… it was this:

Just a few little things to get me started… and look how far I’ve come!
So, I made her a little starter kit!

Just a few things to get her started, icing spatula, some silicone spatulas, pizza cutter, pastry brush, measuring cup, couplers, 4 icing tips, three different kinds of sprinkles and I made her some fondant to play with.

I’m also passing on the two decorating books I started with. They were a great inspiration to me when I got them and I know they’ll be a great inspiration to her.

I prepped a few cakes to work with her on. I made two tiny tiny cakes and pre-iced them so we could just cover them in fondant. Then I baked and leveled two other small two layer cakes to show her how to fill and crumb coat a cake.
We started by covering the two tiny cakes. I didn’t get photos of us covering them because I was obviously a little busy haha, but she did great.

Right away we started cutting out pieces of decoration for the cakes. She was a total natural.

She picked everything up so quickly and anything she didn’t get right away, she figured out within minutes!

We moved on to filling and crumb coating the larger cake, again, no photos of this, I was covered in frosting lol. Then we covered these in fondant. She found out that getting a nice, smooth, even coating of icing on a cake is hard work haha. I helped her a bit, remembering how hard it was for my the first time I crumb coated a cake.
She did a great job with the fondant though :)

Right away she was decorating every side of the cake and having a blast.

Eros is obviously super creative and has some skillz! I think if she really wants to do this, she’ll do great! I’m so glad that I could be a part of helping her learn. She did such a great job and Kevin said she was super stoked on everything. I made them take home all of the cakes hahaha. My husband just lost 80lbs, so… we try to not keep a lot of cake around these days lol.

She wants to come over some time and help me out with a cake which would be great!

I think next week, I’m going to do a tutorial on how to ice a cake using just buttercream and make it look great! Stay tuned! Hope you enjoyed seeing Eros have her little cake making dreams come true! I had a blast working with her today!

A Nightmare Before Christmas Birthday

You’ll have to excuse the lack of tutorials maybe for a week or two. I’m still trying to piece my life back together.

This is one of the coolest cakes I’ve ever put together. I was super proud of it. My friend’s son was turning 4 (which is INSANE) and wanted a Nightmare Before Christmas theme.

Jacks’ face was hand drawn with edible markers and the skulls were cast in white chocolate! Yum!

Teirs of Joy

I love making tiered cakes!

Not the best photo lol. All completely edible! The roses and petals were done with fondant. The inside is strawberry/vanilla zebra cake!

This was for a 21st birthday! The cake was being driven about 2 hours away! Glad I was able to make this. I hope the birthday girl loved it!

I love everything about this cake. The colors, the fondant, the zebra.
Also, the inside is all chocolate/vanilla zebra cake!

My friend Justin… well, he’s a badass. That’s all there is to it.
He built my husband a really cool bike and I wanted to thank him.
He loves my fondant that I make, so I knew I wanted to make him a little fondant cake. I’m going to take it to him at the bike shop he works at.
