One Year of Love

A year ago on the 11th of March, I made a wedding cake for a lovely couple.

They contacted me about making an anniversary cake this year. That way they would have the top tier from the wedding and a fresh cake… you know, in case the year old cake wasn’t so appealing… ;)

Mark asked me for a simple purple iced cake, but I told him I would put swirls on it. In my head, I remembered the original cake being purple with white swirls. So that’s how I figured I would do this cake.

I set out piping and was happy with my work when it was done. Mark came and picked up the cake and later I saw a twitter post tagging me by his lovely wife Crista…

Unknowingly, I had inverted the colors :D And it was sort of perfect.
I love the way they look next to each other.
Year old wedding cake and a one year anniversary cake. A happy looking pair of cakes for a happy couple!

So glad I could be a part of this! It’s stuff like this that makes me really happy that I make cakes!

Cupcake Madness

Okay, some of you know where I stand on cupcakes. I’m not a fan. Of making them. (Big fan of eating them, however…) They’re time consuming and painful, literally! Have you have piped swirls on cupcakes? Hand cramps!

Anyhow, my friends know this, but they also know I can’t help myself and I love a challenge. So I was given the challenge to end all challenges… 200 cupcakes for a wedding. TWO HUNDRED.

The best part was when I realized I only owned one cupcake tin… that would have been an issue. Can you imagine me making 200 cupcakes 12 at a time? lol! Thankfully, I hit the thrift stores and found two and my wonderful mother in law let me borrow a 4th. I was all set!

Just another day in paradise. No big.

The second best part was when I was baking and suddenly realized “Wait… Why do I have so many leftover cupcake liners..? I thought I bought 3 sleeves of 75… but I’ve only used a sleeve an maybe half… OH NO.” I only bought enough stuff to make 100 cupcakes. Fact: I am AWESOME at math. (NOT)

Ok, so I went to the store and got the rest of the supplies lol. I had bought enough of some stuff and not enough of other stuff. Because I’m, evidently, only selectively bad at math.

Cupcake hell. Kill me.
In the end it all worked out and everything came together wonderfully. I admit to using the phrase “cupcake hell” at one point, but I can admit I was completely thrilled to see them all done and frosted.

I also made this little stand and cake to go with the set as a center piece. I used my Cricut Cake to cut out the heart and boarders!

So… the moral of the story, I think, is do the math twice, shop once. Or… something like that.

And… buy a big piping bag, or you’ll end up cutting a hole in the powdered sugar bag and using that until it explodes.

Also, anything worth doing is worth doing right!
Oh, and I hope you’ve gotta big trunk… cuz I’m gonna put my cake in it…

Mystery Machine Birthday Cake!

My niece Sophia turned four this year! So crazy how fast the time flies.
Last year I made her this cake:

This year she’s obsessed with Scooby Doo. Some one suggested I make the Mystery Machine and as much as it stresses me out to make vehicles, I decided I could make this happen lol…
I baked the cake for the van in a bread loaf pan sort of like this one:

Then I stuck it in the freezer for a while to let it get hard so that I could trim it down a bit without it falling apart on me. The cake itself was a hilarious idea that I had to add half a package of strawberry jello and a few handfuls of fresh diced strawberries into my cake mix! (IT WAS DELICIOUS)
The bottom cake was tiedye zebra cake :) (See how to make this type of cake here!)

That cake was gone in like… a split second haha. It was eaten about as fast as I could cut it! I think I cut almost 30 slices out of it all and there were only two left over! I call that sweet success! ;)

The Second Wedding Cake I Ever Made

So I know this couple… and they’re super adorable… and they got married. And I had the privilege of making their wedding cake!
Their venue was an old theatre, and could it have been any cuter???

Okay, seriously, could anything possibly be cuter than that? I think not!!!!
Somewhat hilariously, they didn’t know what part of the cake they were supposed to cut. Eventually, they figured out it was the bottom tier haha.

I would say with complete honesty, it was the coolest wedding I’ve ever been to…even the food was good! And seeing people so in love is just awesome!

Wishing you happily ever after Mark and Crista!

Oh Baby!

Well hey there folks! Yesterday I went to a baby shower. I decided to make a small cake to bring.

I made a butterscotch cake and then made a caramel maple frosting to decorate it with. It was so tasty!!

We were trying so hard to hold out until 12 weeks to spill the news, but after our ultrasound last week, we couldn’t contain ourselves any longer!! This is my 8th week. We’ve been trying for six years and we’re so thrilled. Can’t wait to make birthday cakes for my little guy or girl!

Excitement!

I feel like this is the highlight of my cake making so far. This week… I made my very first wedding cake!
Holy cow it was a lot of work, but so worth every second!

My friend Jess asked me to do the cake when she got engaged and with every passing month, I grew anxious about it. I was so worried I’d ruin the cake/wedding/bride’s life if I messed this up! lol

Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. Honestly, I don’t think it could have gone any more smoothly. Honestly.

I knew the cake was going to be big… but I suppose even after buying the huge pan set, I still wasn’t prepared for just how huge…

It finally hit me when it took 4 lbs of buttercream just to fill and crumb coat the bottom tier. It was 16″x16″ and about 4 1/2″ tall. Uhm. Wow.

I had a mini panic attack, but stayed strong lol. If it helps, that mixing bowl is huge. So for it to look so tiny in this photo is mind blowing to me.

By the time I got all three tiers covered, I was feeling some real shock… “Wait… I’m almost done? Nothing horrible has gone wrong???”

I put EIGHT dowels in the bottom tier (paranoia much? lol), four dowels in the middle tier and though I considered a dowel down the middle, I figured the weight would hold it all in place.

I transported the tiers all separate and stacked them at the wedding. I filled my car with pillows and prayed for the best on the drive. It was SO HOT out. Some how I got the cake there with not a scratch!

Once it was all assembled, I got to stand back and see my work done. I almost cried.
I mean… it’s really pretty, isn’t it?

What a great moment for me. And to be able to share that with friends… fantastic.
I also made an anniversary tier. With a handmade box.

The wedding was a blast and everyone loved the cake! I did green buttercream between the top tier and orange between the middle! The bottom tier was chocolate.

So much fun! The wedding was just great and Jess was a perfect and gorgeous bride. She was about as far from a bridezilla as anyone could possibly be.
Congratulations Jess! I’m so happy for you and so thankful that you trusted me to make such an important cake for you!
