Flowers and Flames

My wonderful former roommate Brad told his neighbors about my cakes and they contacted me about a joint birthday party they were throwing for their children. (I think Brad knew he’d be invited to the party… win-win for him hahaha)

Now, some of you might know I don’t care much for cupcakes… well, let me rephrase, making cupcakes. You bring some over, I’ll nom them all day. Anyhow, that weekend was like… my cupcake nightmare weekend. Between this and another order, about 75 cupcakes.
I’ll tell you what though, they were darn cute.
I was asked to do a small cake for each child and some cupcakes with matching theme.
Everything was just freaking adorable.

Making the flame cupcakes was a BLAST.I swirled yellow and orange icing and then topped some with white chocolate ladders and some with white chocolate flames. I made the flames by painting white chocolate onto wax paper and then airbrushing them! They came out so well and the little fire truck was awesome.

Little lady bugs and flowers, super springy colors… the lady bug on the cake matches the ladybug on the dress they got her for the party. ADORBS.

Ok, so maybe I don’t ALWAYS hate making cupcakes. But don’t quote me on that ;)

A Nightmare Before Christmas Birthday

You’ll have to excuse the lack of tutorials maybe for a week or two. I’m still trying to piece my life back together.

This is one of the coolest cakes I’ve ever put together. I was super proud of it. My friend’s son was turning 4 (which is INSANE) and wanted a Nightmare Before Christmas theme.
I think I did them proud…

Jacks’ face was hand drawn with edible markers and the skulls were cast in white chocolate! Yum!

Everyone loved it and the birthday boy was happy… success!

Tutorial Tuesday: Chocolate Butterflies

Better late than never, Tuesday isn’t over yet!
I’ve had a few requests for a tutorial on how to make the chocolate butterflies I use to decorate some of my cakes.

Butterfly Baby Shower Cake spring birthday cake
It’s super easy and fun! You can use this technique for lots of other things as well!

Tutorial Tuesday

Ok, so we need to start with two different colors of chocolate or candy melt. If you’ve not worked much with melting/tempering chocolate, candy melt/almond bark is your best bet. You can find a package in the baking isle at your grocery store for around $3.

You’ll need wax paper, a couple of icing tips, frosting bags and some scotch tape.

Go online and google “butterflies”, find a page of those suckers and print that baby out! You’ll want to tape that print out to your counter and then tape the wax paper over top. The tape will keep your sheets lined up and not sliding around.

I wouldn’t use anything larger than a no.3 icing tip. Remember, the smaller the tip, the more detailed your butterflies will be.
Melt down the chocolate that you want to use for your outline. It doesn’t matter which you use for the outline, either works great.
I melt 30 seconds at a time stirring in between in the microwave until it’s melted.

Tutorial Tuesday

Fill your icing bag with your chocolate and start tracing your butterflies. (YES it is THAT EASY!) :D

Once you’ve finished your outlines, melt down your second color. This one, you’ll be using to fill in the rest of the butterflies. As you get this ready, your outlines should cool and set up enough to hold the white chocolate.

They should set up pretty quickly, but you can speed up the process by cooling them in the fridge. Once they’re solid, you can just peel them off the wax paper!

See, super simple!

You can attach these to the cake with melted chocolate, frosting or piping gel.

Hope you are all having a good week. I can’t wait for the snow here in Ohio to melt so that I can see some real butterflies.

Lovely

This is the best cake I’ve ever made! I think it’s completely lovely. My friend ordered it from me for her sister’s bridal shower.

She gave me a lot of creative control, which I loved because this was a cake I’ve been wanting to make.
My original design was only two tier, but I kept staring at it this morning thinking, no, no I need one more tier! It needs three. this is the first 3 tier cake I have made. I was really excited about it.

This cake is surrounded in rolled vanilla wafers and topped with white chocolate that I spent over an hour curling to perfection.
The wedding colors were lavender and white, I really wanted lavender roses and I was way excited when I found these cloth o
nes at the store which matched the ribbon perfectly.
Beneath all this, the top tier is confetti cake, the middle tier is chocolate and
the bottom tier is confetti. Yum!
Today I also made cake pops for the first time! I’ve been wanting to do them for a while. It was a lot of work!
I cut small cylinders of cake out of a sheet cake, dipped the bottoms in candy melt and put s
ticks in them. I let the candy melt set up in the fridge for a bit and then iced the tops.
I ended up taking these into the bar I work at for my co-workers to munch on and give away to friends.
While I was in there I got to snag a fresh strawberry cookie that my boss’s mom had made. It was delicious haha.
I made some full size cup cakes today to because I can’t handle not having some kind of cake in the house at all times now haha. Didn’t take any photos though! Sorry!
